Story Land in New Hampshire
by Colleen Lunn Scholer
On a recent summer weekend we packed up our family of four for a special road trip to what we have learned to be a childhood rite of passage in New England, Story Land, a children's theme park in Glen, New Hampshire. With our favorite children's music in the car (we still believe in family car travel without the DVD player), including The Dragonfly Races by Ellis Paul and new releases by Putumayo Kids, Hawaiian Playground and African Dreamland and Music for a Green Planet by Hayes Greenfield, we set off on the winding roads that would lead us from Maine to our fantasy adventure.

When our son was barely one year's old, I started being asked by local friends if we had taken him to Story Land yet. Since my husband and I did not grow up in New England, we were unfamiliar with this 54 year-old park where generations of New England children have enjoyed many a special summer days. This is a fun park geared for the young family, with themed rides and lively shows based on familiar storybook characters.
After one short break for dinner, we arrived at our accommodations for the weekend, The Old Field House Inn located in Intervale, New Hampshire, just minutes away from Story Land. I must say that staying at this quiet country lodge with hosts and owners Rod and Linea Hopwood was one of our favorite parts of the whole weekend. We were greeted by their lovable and kid-friendly, Alaskan Malamute. I don't know that I have ever met a more friendly and accommodating dog. He was willing to take several hugs a day from my two and a half-year-old daughter. My daughter was also immediately taken by the moose stuffed animals lining the side of the stairs to the second floor.
We set up shop in a two-bedroom suite, perfect for putting the little ones down for bed and allowing mom and dad a few minutes alone to read and watch something on t.v. besides Sesame Street. Before bed, the kids wanted to head out to the swimming pool. I was a bit skeptical since it had been a cold June week and the pool was outside. To our delight, the outdoor pool was heated to a comfortable 80 degrees.
