As an added bonus, the kids enjoyed a new 2008 park attraction. The Royal Hanneford Circus arrived at Story Land this year. With three shows a day under the big top there were plenty of opportunities to see five family-favorite acts: quick-change artists who change their wardrobe in an instant, a slapstick trampoline act, hula hoop mastery, the daring and high-flying Wheel of Destiny, and performing house cats! My only complaint about this show was that it was a bit warm under the big-top even with the fans blowing. The other shows in the theme park were within air-conditioned buildings.

Each of the kids had their favorite ride. One of Matthew's (our four-and-a-half-year-old) favorite rides was the Buccaneer Pirate Ship. With a play sword that he picked up in the gift shop near the ride, he actively engaged in conversation with the pirate in charge of our ship. Emily (our two-and-a-half-year-old) really enjoyed flying in the Dutch Shoes where she giggled as we maneuvered the joystick to take us up and down.
As a parent, I enjoyed the cleanliness of the park and the variety of rides spaced out on the 35 acres of the park. This park helps families on a budget by welcoming picnic baskets into the park and offering free strollers. I loved the connection with all of the great classic children's stories and nursery rhymes. It was fun to take the children into the old woman's shoe and to sit down beside a spider just like Miss Muffet. We got precious video of Emily singing "Ba, Ba, Black Sheep," to the real black sheep and watching the real three little pigs play in a pen with a straw house, stick house and brick house as a backdrop.
By the time we had left on the second day of our trip, the whole family was filled with wonderful memories and I had great photos and video footage to help us remembered everything. We had barely left the park when both children were sound asleep in the back seat... definitely a sign that they had had lots of fun!
Story Land is on Route 16, six miles north of North Conway, 1/4 mile from the junction of Routes 16 & 302 in Glen, New Hampshire. It is only 150 miles from Boston, MA, 100 miles from Manchester, NH and 70 miles from Portland, Maine, all cities with great airports so you could still enjoy this great park even if you can't make a "road trip" to Story Land. There are lots of other family friendly things to do in the North Conway area so you could easily make your trip into a week-long family vacation.
