Travel Games for The Preschool Child

Planning a road trip to Grandma's house this holiday season, but dread the drive with the kids? Make it a fun ride with these fun games and activities made just for travelling.

COLORS
Name a color and have your children take turns naming things that are usually that color. See who can name the most. Most answers will be items found in nature. (for example: yellow- lemon, banana, corn, daffodil.)

STORY
Start a story with you children. Stop often and let them tell what would happen next. Children of all ages can usually participate in this game.

COLOR HUNT
Call out a color and a type of vehicle such as blue station wagon. See who can find the first one.

COUNTING GAMES
Many miles can disappear when you count. Set a time period (such as 15 minutes or until a certain place is reached) and select a subject to count (such as campers or semi-trucks, etc.

LETTERS
Older children can look for letters on signs to spell their names and other words. Younger children who may not know how to spell can look for familiar letters.

To play another letter game, pick a letter (for example, "B") and have your children look for things that start with the same sound.

TRAVEL BOX GAMES
A travel box can be any sturdy container with a lid that can be used as a game board or as a table. An aluminum cake pan with a plastic lid works well. Inside the cake pan store a pad of paper, some crayons, a pair of dice and a deck of cards. If desired, include a small, drawstring, clothe bag with small plastic cars, animals, people, etc. Then cut out a large piece of felt to fit on the inside of the cake pan lid. Cut out small felt shapes of different colors, and store them in a small resealable plastic bag inside the cake pan. To use a felt board en route, have the child put the cake pan lid inside up on his or her lap and lay the large pieces of felt inside. Your child now has a surface on which to arrange and rearrange the felt shapes.

ANIMAL SOUNDS
Make animal sounds and let your children take turns naming the animals. If your children are able to do so, let them take turns making the animal sounds.
