Now that your supplies are at the ready and your work surface has been prepared, let's begin!
What You Do
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, & vanilla thoroughly. Blend dry ingredients. Add to sugar mixture alternately with sour cream and mix until thoroughly combined.
Divide dough in half. Into one half add a bit of red food coloring and into the other, add the green – remember that a little paste food coloring goes a long way. Work the food coloring into the dough by turning it over and over, creating a variegated pattern—do not mix it into the dough long enough to completely color the dough.

Form 6 in. ropes out of the dough. Starting at one end of a rope, roll it up into a circle. Place cookies on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake 7-8 minutes or firm. They should not bake long enough to start browning. Let cool 1 minute on the cookie sheet, then remove to cooling racks to completely cool.
Drizzle with icing (recipe above) and sprinkle with colored sugars, if desired.
Allow enough time for the icing to dry before wrapping as candies.
To wrap as “candies”:
Tear off a small piece of plastic wrap. Place one cookie, top side down, onto the plastic wrap. Fold plastic wrap horizontally over cookie—like wrapping a package. Flip cookie over and tie each end with red curling ribbon. Trim the plastic wrap on each end of the cookie and curl ribbons.
