  Kids' Summer Party Ideas

Make a splash with your child by inviting his or her friends to a super summer bash! Get started with these fun-in-the-sun kids’ summer party ideas, including tips for choosing a summer party theme, food and decorating suggestions, and awesome activities that will delight your guests.

Summer Party Themes
Choosing decorations and games for your child’s summer party is easier if you’ve decided on a theme. Would your child like a “splash party” with kiddie pools and a sprinkler to keep guests cool? Or maybe your little boy would rather have a baseball theme party with a Wiffle Ball tournament in the park. If your daughter loves to dance, then she might enjoy a hula girl-themed backyard luau. Alternatively, you may want to consider another popular summer theme, like pirates, safari, ocean, beach, or jungle animals. Whichever summer party theme you choose, Birthday in a Box has complementary partyware that will create the foundation for your decorations, like:

Summer Party Decorations
Pull out all the lawn chairs, beach blankets, and beach balls you own! These make perfect decorations for any summer party. Sand pails and flower leis are great beach-themed accents, too. As for larger decorations, tiki torches are a fun touch if you’re having a late-afternoon or evening party outside. You may also want to borrow or purchase a few artificial or inflatable palm trees, and set them around the party area. Hang a summer party banner across the party area entrance to welcome your guests, and play beach music in the background to help set the mood.

For a fun summer party centerpiece, make a treasure chest by covering a cardboard box with brown paper and strips of gold foil. Fill it with plastic beads, gold coins and other “treasure”, and surround it with seashells and a few bean bag fish. Or, fill a wide, low bowl with sand, and create a mini seaside scene on it using drink umbrellas, little seashells, and beach-themed miniatures or Barbie® accessories. Then, set the table with complementary summer partyware. For an extra-special touch, add a lei bracelet and/or a tiki cup with an umbrella or flip flop straw in it to each place setting; let your guests take these home as fun party keepsakes.

Finally, make your party pop with balloons! Cluster colorful latex balloons in groups of 3 or 5, and weight them with bean bag fish or beach-themed favor bags filled with sand or shells. If desired, you can incorporate a few Mylar balloons in cool shapes, like flip flops or popsicles, too. Keep in mind that latex balloons will only stay afloat for 8 hours at best, and Mylar balloons will hold up better in the hot summer sun.

Fun Foods
Serve your guests summery picnic fare, like hotdogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, or BBQ, short ears of corn on the cob, and a variety of cold salads, like fruit or macaroni salad. For sweet summer treats, either popsicles or an ice cream sundae bar will be a hit with kids. Turn the sundae bar into an ice cream cart by setting up a table with cones and ice cream at one end and a variety of toppings in serving bowls at the other end. Let guests "order" their scoops of ice cream from an adult, and then add their own toppings. Don't forget the whipped cream and cherries!

If you’re looking for a tasty, refreshing beverage to serve your guests, consider making a sherbet and ginger ale punch or virgin piña coladas with a store-bought mix. Or, if you have the time, you can whip up a batch of these yummy Banana-Berry Smoothies instead:

Ingredients:

  • 2 Bananas
  • 2 C Strawberries (Note: If using frozen strawberries, reduce milk to ½ cup.)
  • 1 C Milk
  • 1 C Frozen Yogurt

Directions:
Slice the fruit, put it in a blender with the yogurt and milk, and blend on high until smooth. Pour into glasses, and serve!
