Simple St. Patrick's Day Wreath
Designed by Amanda Formaro

Welcome the luck of the Irish into your home this Spring with this simple project for you and your kids. This wreath takes very little time to make and requires few supplies. An easy craft with fun results!

You will need

9" styrofoam wreath
white craft glue
large paint brush or sponge
7/8" wide (22 mm) sheer green ribbon with a pattern
1/8" wide (3 mm) gold ribbon
1/4" wide (6 mm) green ribbon
*pot of gold decoration (or something similar, such as a leprechaun or clover)
hot glue gun
straight pin (optional)

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do

Holding the wreath in your hand, working in sections of about 3 inches at a time, dot on some white craft glue. Spread the glue out evenly with the paint brush or sponge so that blobs of glue do not seep through the ribbon. This method also allows the glue to dry faster. Wrap the ribbon around the glued section of the wreath, overlapping the ribbon just a little with each round. Apply more glue with the paint brush and repeat this process until entire wreath is covered. Hold the end piece of ribbon in place until it dries before moving on to the next step. Alternatively, parents can insert a straight pin into the wreath at the end of the ribbon to hold it in place until it dries.

Decide which side of the wreath will be the back and starting from that side, begin wrapping the gold ribbon around the wreath, leaving about an inch or so in between as you wrap. Once you have gone completely around, glue the end in place at the back of the wreath and allow to dry, or a parent can insert a straight pin in place to hold the ribbon to the glue.

Cut an 18" length of ribbon from all three ribbon spools. Hold them all together so that they are all matching in length, then wrap once around the bottom of the wreath and tie into a bow in the front. Place your bow off center just a little so that your pot of gold can rest in the middle just to the left of your bow.

Parents should hot glue the pot of gold decoration onto the wreath, next to the bow as pictured.

Cut a 3 inch piece of gold ribbon, double over to make a loop and glue it to the back of the wreath for the hanger. Hot glue works best for this step. You're done, hang your wreath!

* We used a plant poke decoration found at Michael's Crafts and removed the stick.

Caution: Parents should use extreme caution if allowing children to handle a hot glue gun. Hot glue hurts!

Kids' Crafts: Paper Fantastic : 50 Creative Projects to Fold, Cut, Glue, Paint & Weave
Safe, easy, fast, and fun: paper crafts are the perfect creative activity for children. And these 48 unique projects—engagingly displayed on colorful pages—prove there’s more to paper art than just cutting out hearts. A special section starts kids off by introducing them to different papers and tools, while six technique-based chapters present imaginative possibilities for transforming everything from corrugated cardboard to vellum. Using collage, budding artists can create a Dream Travel Box. Young fashionistas will enjoy designing their own paper clothesline. Or they might fold a Book Necklace, make an origami Peace Crane, construct big beautiful Butterfly Wings for a costume party, even create a cool paper-mâché pig. Best of all, kids will learn how to turn their own crafty ideas into reality.
