  Salt Dough Space Mobile
by Amanda Formaro

Salt dough is a fun medium for all ages of kids. Make this easy mobile and hang it in your child's room or share it with a science teacher. A fun activity to help your kids appreciate our solar system.

What You Need

1/4 cup salt
1/2 flour
1/4 water
star and circle cookie cutters
cookie sheet
acrylic paint: white, light blue, green, yellow, orange
2- 12" dowels
yarn
fishing line
scissors
toothpick
acrylic sealer spray

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do

Preheat oven 250 degrees F.

Mix together the flour, salt and water to make a soft dough. If it's too sticky, add small amounts of flour until pliable. Be careful not to add too much as your creations will crack if the dough is too dry!

Roll the dough out, or press it with your fingers, to about 1/2" thick.

Cut ornaments out with cookie cutters and place on cookie sheet, or you can place dough on cookie sheet and cut them out directly on the sheet. We used a large circle for Earth, two smaller circles for the moon and Mars, one large star and we made several small stars.

Use the toothpick to poke a hole near the top of each ornament for the hanger. Poke it in and slowly and gently "stir" in a circular motion to make the hole bigger.

Bake for 2 1/2 hours.

Remove from oven and let cool.

Paint each shape, white for stars, yellow for the moon, orange for mars, and of course light blue and green for Earth. You can add other planets too if you like! When they are dry, turn them over and paint the other side.

Spray with acrylic sealer spray and let dry.

Thread fishing line through the hole in the ornament and tie in a knot. Leave about 12-14" of line on each ornament for hanging.

Cross the two dowels to make a plus sign, tie the middle with yarn. Wrap the yarn around several times to make it nice and sturdy, tie in a knot.

Tie the fishing lined ornaments to the dowels, lifting carefully after each one to check for weight distribution.

Hang mobile by tying a longer piece of yarn to the center of the two dowels and using a planet hanger in the ceiling.
