Craft Supplies

  Fall Crayon Craft
by Susie Tilton

I love a clearance rack. After every holiday, I am out hunting the bargains. In recent years, Halloween has emerged as the second largest retail holiday. That means lots of neat merchandise to amass and people are decorating earlier than ever. As I went through my Halloween boxes, I came across a ghost cake pan that was free with a purchase. Ghost cakes are adorable, albeit a little on the large side. But who needs cake when the trick-or-treat candy is so plentiful? So I decided I needed a new idea to use the ghost cake pan.

I love to make little treat bags for the neighbor kids we know well. So along with the candy there is usually a little something else in there. I decided to use my ghost cake pan and make some ghost crayons. We have a large storage container full of crayons and not enough kids to color with them. I admit that every fall when we are buying the required school supplies, I am compelled to buy a box of crayons. They don't require them, but I love the smell, the perfect flat tips and all those fabulous colors. I am always the first to volunteer to color with the little relatives.

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on our Facebook fan page!

I decided I would try a ghost in the white tones with a little grey and pink mixed in, one ghost in all green, a ghost of assorted colors and the last ghost in the oranges and reds with a touch of purple. And isn't this the best idea for those white crayons? Who uses them? It's best to have a grown-up use a straight edge to slice the label on the crayon and peel it cleanly off. Simply break the crayons in pieces and drop into the pan. Bake for 10-15 minutes on 250 degrees F. When they are completely melted, remove from the oven and let cool. My ghosts popped right out of the aluminum pan.

I was so inspired by the colors I decided to pull out my antique cast iron corn bread pan shaped like ears of corn. I broke up all the colors of Indian corn and melted them in the same manner. Sadly, these did not release as nicely. I chilled them which led to a few cracks, but I got them out and the colors were great, and the seasoning in the pan gave the corn a little antiqued look. The crayons color in a rainbow of colors and are so easy for little hands to hold. The best part is that this little craft transcends all holidays, and I have little tins for many of them, hearts, eggs, bunnies, flowers. You can even make a jelly roll pan lined in wax or parchment paper of melted crayons and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes while the wax is still soft. Just remember, hot wax burns quite badly. So let an adult do the hot part and the kids color with the cool new crayons!
