Now that your supplies are at the ready and your work surface has been prepared, let's begin!
What You Do
Step 1
Lay your fabric down on your work surface, wrong side facing up. Peel off the backing from the 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of label paper, and apply the sticky side to your fabric. Slowly smooth out any air bubbles with your hand as you press down.
Step 2
Trim the fabric from around the edge of the label paper. It doesn't need to be perfect, just as close as possible. Flip over, so that the fabric side is facing up. Smooth out any air bubbles. Flip it back over (fabric should now be facing down again)and fold in half length-wise. Cut down the center. You should have 2 pieces of equal size.
Step 3
Trim off the bottom 2 corners of each piece. These mitered corners will reduce the bulk when gluing the pieces together. Fold in about 1/2" around along the sides and bottom.
Glue down your folded edges with your hot glue gun (small children should use craft glue). Glue sides first and bottom last.
If you are NOT using pinking shears:
Cut off about 1 1/2" from the top of one piece and fold about 1/4". Glue folded edge down. This will be the front of your pencil case. Fold the top edge of the other piece about 1/4". Glue folded edge down. This will be the back of your pencil case.
If you are using pinking shears:
Cut off about 1 1/2" from the top of one piece with pinking shears. This will be the front of your pencil case. Trim the top edge of the other piece with pinking shears. This will be the back of your pencil case.
Step 4
Place the top piece on the bottom piece, wrong sides together, making sure that the bottom edge of each piece is even with the other. Apply glue to the inside edges (not too close to edge or glue will seep out the sides) of the sides and bottom, pressing down as you are glueing.
Step 5
To create the front flap, simply fold the back piece down so that it overlaps the front. Apply a the self-ahesive velcro tab to the inside of this top flap, and to the front piece making sure that both pieces are lined up and will attach when closed.
You're Finished!
Glitter, rhinestones, ribbon, and trims make great embellishments. Have fun decorating it!
