  • Sleep Apnea in Toddlers - Our son was referred to ENT for sleep apnea. The overnight monitor showed his O2 levels to be low, but not enough to warrant a tonsillectomy. However, his resting pulse rates through the night set off the monitor alarm, should we be worried?
  • Sleep Deprived Children Have Health Problems - If your child has frequent health and/or emotional problems, consider that a lack of sleep may be all or at least part of the problem. Every function in the body is affected by sleep. See what our expert has to say.
  • Snacking Done Right - Snacking has gotten a bad rap. Mention the word "snack," and visions of cookies, chips, and sodas begin to dance through most parents' heads. But in spite of its negative connotations, snacking the right way is actually a good thing. Snacks can make a big contribution to the daily nutrition of kids of all ages.
  • Starting Solids - Your baby is six weeks old and still not sleeping through the night. The pediatrician says this is normal, your nosey neighbor warns of SIDS and your mother is pushing you to feed him cereal.
  • Taking Care of Troubled Tummies - Diarrhea is not the most pleasant topic to discuss or even think about, but the truth is, it affects one and a half million children each year. Many times, a case of diarrhea will simply run its course, lasting just a day or two, and one of the most important things parents can do is keep their child hydrated and wait for the diarrhea to subside. For today's active kids? who have schedules filled with soccer practice, dance classes, piano lessons and any number of other activities? sometimes a little help is in order to ease the embarrassment and discomfort caused by a bout of diarrhea.
  • Teach Kids to Be Active - Physical activity is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help reduce stress and ensure that a child gets a good night's sleep. It releases both physical and emotional tension and has a positive effect on the neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. Unfortunately, the rise in childhood obesity is a telltale sign that many of our children are not getting adequate exercise.
  • The Dangers of Shaking Young Children - Many well-intentioned, responsible people who would never dream of hitting a child, think nothing of giving a small child a "good shaking." But while such punishment was generally considered harmless until a few years ago, research now indicates that even mild or moderate shaking can cause serious disabilities and even death.
  • The Killer Under Our Sinks: Inhalants - Inhalants are common products found right in the home and are among the most popular and deadly substances kids abuse. Inhalant abuse can result in death from the very first use. About one in five kids report having used inhalants by the eighth grade.
  • There's Still Time to Protect Yourself and Your Kids Against Influenza - If you think it's too late for you and your kids to stave off the discomforts and possibly serious complications of the flu, you're in for some good news. While October and November are optimal months for getting vaccinated, receiving the flu vaccine anytime through December and beyond can still be beneficial as the flu season can last as late as May.
  • Travel Health & Safety - Travel with kids can be an enriching experience for the entire family. In addition to recreation and relaxation, family vacations are a wonderful learning opportunity for children of all ages. Yet when traveling with kids there are a few travel health and safety issues to consider whether you are taking them out of state or abroad. The following tips will ensure you are prepared in the event a child falls ill or requires medical attention on the road.
  • What Causes ADHD? - One of the first questions a parent will have is "Why? What went wrong?" "Did I do something to cause this?"
  • What is Pyloric Stenosis? - What can you tell me about pyloric stenosis? My first born son had this but other than telling me his first born son may have the same problem they did not tell me much about it. He had projectile vomiting and they kept changing his formula with no success until the surgery at 6 weeks old.
  • When Fat Isn't Cute Anymore - Fatso, blimp, porky, and blubber-bin. These are only a few of the cruel words that overweight kids have to live with every day. For most of them, obesity will be a ghost that will haunt them even in their adult lives, and unlike their physical appearance, their emotional scars will never be a joke.
  • When Your School-age Children Are Sick - It never fails. One of your children gets sick when your spouse is away on business and you have a full schedule. To complicate matters, it can be difficult deciding when to keep a child home and when to forge ahead business as usual.
  • Why Aren't Antibiotics Helping My Child's Ear Infection? - My child has an ear infection and started taking antibiotics yesterday. She had 2 doses yesterday, 1 dose this morning and will get 1 this evening. However, she does not seem any better. She is still very sleepy and will not eat or drink much. Why haven't I seen any improvement?
  • Yoga Proving Popular for Kids - You may know the benefits of yoga for adults, but do you know about all the benefits your kids can gain from a little yoga practice each week? Yoga is rapidly gaining favor as both an alternative and a complement to traditional kids' sports.
