  • Calendula & Borage: Herbs for Summer Color - Calendula and borage add color to your herb garden throughout summer with a succession of long-lasting blooms. These are two of the prettiest herbs you can grow, and they are relatively carefree. Both are annuals, but once they are established in your garden they are eager reseeders.
  • First Aid for a Dried Out Hanging Basket - Let's face it: Our houseplants aren't the most important things on our to-do lists, and even the most attentive gardeners will sometimes forget to water the hanging baskets. The good news is that unless the plants are completely dead, they can usually be revived.
  • Forcing Bulbs for Winter Beauty - If you are like me and go through a little bit of a blue period in the winter when you can't garden outside, then you may want to consider forcing bulbs. You can do this with daffodils, hyacinths, snowdrops, tulips and crocus, among others.
  • Gardening Adventures With Kids - I remember the first packet of seeds my sons chose to buy at the garden center, as well as their excitement, their impatience and then their amazement as "their" flowers began to bloom.
  • Gardening With Kids Project : Colorful and Easy Calendula Pots - Children love growing things, but sometimes they need a little encouragement and some instruction to get them interested. Having children decorate their own clay flower pot and helping them plant Calendula, which is also known as pot marigold is a great way to begin a gardening journey that often last their entire lifetime.
  • Growing Butterfly Bushes - What is a butterfly bush? Does it really attract butterflies? Buddleia does indeed attract many varieties of butterflies including Fritillaries, Western Tiger Swallowtails, Tortoiseshells and Red Admirals. The bush has blossoms in white, red, pink, yellow, purple, blue and maroon that cover the entire bush. They look much like lilac blooms and are honey scented. Red varieties may attract hummingbirds!
  • Growing Citrus in Containers - Citrus trees are terrific for sunrooms. The glossy foliage looks great year round, and the scent of the blossoms can fill a room.
  • Growing Lilacs - Although my love of herbs and flowers keeps me from ever choose just one favorite scent, I would say the lilac is my sentimental favorite. To me, there is nothing more wonderful then a light spring breeze that carries the scent of lilacs across the way. One simple bouquet can scent an entire room.
  • Growing Old Fashioned Snapdragons - Snapdragons (antirrhinum majus) are charming old fashioned flowers loved by children and adults. I have grown them for many years and love them more each season.
  • Growing Sunflowers - Sunflowers are easy, and inexpensive to grow, and yes, everyone can do it! The days of sunflowers being contained to the vegetable garden are over. Children of all ages love sunflowers and can participate in all aspects.
  • How to Grow Strawberries - There's nothing like a sun-ripened, freshly picked strawberry. Warm, sweet and juicy! Growing your own will offer you a sweeter strawberry because it is allowed to ripen on the plant. You will also know how it was grown (no pesticides, etc.). Children often like growing strawberries, well, because they like strawberries! Here are some pointers on growing and using them.
  • How to Transplant Irises - In the past two decades, I have thinned out the irises and planted them in other locations. Each year in early June, the irises bloom in a variety of colors: white, blue, yellow and purple.
  • Mixing Perennials Into Your Garden - Perennial plants and flowers stay around for more than just one gardening season. Some of them bloom again for only about 3 years, while others will continue to bloom for many years to come.
  • Roses: The Beloved Herb - Roses are not only beautiful, but they are a soothing, fragrant herb that we can use in recipes, both culinary and cosmetic. You can mix dried rose petals in with other herbs or black teas for a lovely tea. Add them to your bath teas as well.
  • Step by Step Rose Bush Pruning - Pruning your roses will give you healthier plants and flowers. Some people are intimidated by pruning roses when there is no need to be, it is very simple, fun and rewarding. All you need is a pair of loppers or other pruning device, a pair of gloves and a wheelbarrow or box to tote away the clippings.
  • Think Vintage for Your Garden - Container gardeners take note. Tired of clay pots? Think vintage, because when you do, there’ll be lots to choose from. Most likely vintage items will be worn and chipped which will only add charm to your garden.
  • Twenty Tips for Producing Low-Allergy Gardens - What we plant in our own yards often has a direct effect on our own health and the health of those near us. A pollen-producing male tree in our own yard will easily expose us to ten times more pollen than would a similar tree growing just down the block.
