Acne: Causes & Treatments- My son is 16 years old and has acne. What causes it and what can I do to help? Is his diet a contributing factor?
Are My Kids Underweight?- My children dance and do karate and the instructor noticed my kids looked underweight compared to other kids. She suggested I add more fat to their diet. Should I? Their doctor has never said anything about it. I'm not sure what to do.
Beyond the Checkup: Many Faces of Your Child's Pediatrician- While treating a child for a cold in the ER, I asked the mother why she had not just visited her doctor. The baby's mother replied, "We have an appointment tomorrow, but that's for shots." She did not understand the full role of her pediatrician.
Can I Put My 8 yr. Old Son On A Diet?- I have an eight year old son who is 51" high and 85lbs. He is hungry all the time and I worry about his food choices. As a baby he suffered from reflux and a feeding disorder that made him sensitive to certain textures in his mouth. Most of the textures that he dislikes, even now, are in the fruits and vegetable family. Therefore, he eats more carbs and meats rather than a balanced diet.
My question is, how can I ensure that he is getting enough vitamins from foods without forcing him to eat foods that he dislikes and secondly, is he too young to put him on a diet to lose weight?
Can I Use Over the Counter Wart Remover?- My 7 year old granddaughter has 2 warts on the left side of her stomach. They stick out 1/4 inch. She has had them about 6 months. I called the Dr to make an appointment. The cost was $60 to $200. She doesn't have insurance. Is it ok to use a wart remover over the counter?
Croup- My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with croup. I was told to use a cool mist humidifier and give her an expectorant. She has had some coughing episodes that have resulted in her having difficulty catching her breath. How long should croup last and is there anything else I could do to avoid her coughing episodes? I did bring her into a bathroom and turn the shower on to help make it easier for her to breath.
Does an Extra Nipple Require Mammograms?- My 6 year old daughter was born with an extra nipple. It is below her left nipple by a couple of inches and is only recognizable as a nipple upon close inspection. Our pediatrician identified it when I asked about it during a well-baby visit when she was about 6 months old. In the future, will this area need mammograms? I've never told her what it is, just that it's been there since birth.
Ear Infections and Antibiotics- Do you remember the good old days when we were given an antibiotic for just about everything and often over the phone?? Those days are clearly gone and there's current evidence that they are likely not to return any time soon.
How Can I Be Sure My Son Eats Healthy?- My son is turning 18 months old this month. All of a sudden he will not eat anything nutritious like he used to. He spits out his vitamins, and if I put liquid vitamins in his drink, he refuses to drink it. He used to love bananas, carrots, lima beans, peas, mashed potatoes. Now it seems like he will only eat pasta. If I try to hide his veggies in his mac and cheese, he spits out the pieces of vegetables and chews up the noodles. How can I make sure he is getting proper nutrition? Any suggestions?
How Can I Help My Child Stay Dry?- I have a 5 yr. old who will be turning 6 in 3 months and is still wetting the bed. I put him to bed at 8:00 and by 10:00, when I take him to the bathroom again, he is already wet. Other examples include a 3 hour road trip where all he had was a bowl of cereal, no other liquids. We had to pull over twice!
How Can I Help My Kids to Stop Nail Biting?- I have four children, ages 7,5,3, and 6 months. The three older ones are all nail biters. I myself bite my nails. Is this the reason that the kids do it? And what can I do to help them stop? I know for myself it will be willpower but I do not want them to be nailbiters like I am. Thanks for your input.
Is it a Speech Problem?- We adopted our now 22 month old daughter from Guatemala last year. She was in an orphanage until 4 months old and then transferred to a foster home with a mom and dad and another 3 year old child for the last 3 months of her stay until we brought her to her "forever home."
She was 7 months old when she arrived. Her speech is not great. I hear her saying a handful of words that I can understand (about 10). She had tubes put in for recurrent OM about 4 months ago. I know she can hear me just fine (there is alot of selective hearing too).
When do I become concerned about her lack of words and speech?
Is it Asthma?- My grandson is 3 years old. He had tonsillitis and ear infections for about three months. After about 4 different antibiotics and 3 or 4 rounds of steroids they sent him to an ENT who decided he should have tubes in his ears, his tonsils out and adenoid removed. Since the removal and tubes, every time he starts running or gets wound up, he starts coughing until he throws up. His doctor thinks it might be from his asthma. He cannot seem to shake this. We are getting very frustrated for him. He is a very active little boy and cannot play like he longs to do without throwing up. Do you have any suggestions?
Is My Baby Teething?- My 9 month old is very fussy and cries the minute I put the spoon in his mouth. He will eat cheerios and pieces of bagel though he only drinks about 4-5 ounces of milk (usually its 7-8oz.). He has a stuffy nose, no fever. Could he be teething (He has not one tooth yet), if so, how often should I give Tylenol if he does not have a fever?
Is My Son Too Short?- My son is 8.5 years old. I am worried about his height. He is only 4 feet tall and 55 lbs. I am 4 feet 10 inches tall and my husband is 5 feet 9 inches tall. As per the internet calculation, my son's growth potential is 5 feet and 6.5 inches. In the last year, he has gained only 1 inch. I am afraid that he may not be able to touch 5 feet and 6.5 inches. Can you suggest something?
Is My Toddler Growing OK?- I was wondering if you can tell me if I should be concerned about the health of my daughter. She is currently 15 months old. At 13 and a half months she weighed in at 8.42 kg and she was at the 50 percentile for height. She is also really paled skin and it was suggested she was anemic. They didn't do any tests and I am inclined not to believe that she is as she is really active and was that skin colour since birth.
Just Because It's a Virus, Doesn't Mean Your Child is not Sick- A child's immune system is still gaining experience with the world so they get many more illnesses than we do. That's a lot of missed school and work days. It's no wonder parents hear "virus" and begin to panic.
My Child is Obese: What Can I Do to Help Her?- My daughter is 6yrs old and obese, weighing 106 lbs. That is well above the 90 percentile line for her age. We have had her to her pediatrician and to a specialist for lab work. All the results came back in normal range. We have been struggling for over a year to get her weight under control but she keeps gaining.
My Newborn Has a Rash- My son is 6 weeks old and has rashes on his cheeks and chin. I am wondering if he is allergic to baby powder or what is the cause. I took him to the doctor (he is not a pediatrician) and he prescribed Hydrocortisone med to put on his face. Is this okay?
Pink Eye in Baby- My little 5 month old woke up this morning with red eyelids - it looked as though I put pink eye shadow on him. He now has a reddish circle around both eyes kind of like a raccoon.
Second Opinions- Thankfully most children are healthy and many will never need the care of a specialist. But should you find yourself in a situation that requires input beyond your pediatrician, there are some important issues to consider. Here's a true story that will shed some light on the issues to consider.
Seven Year Old Wetting the Bed- My daughter is seven years old, and she still urinates during the night while sleeping. Could you please advise me what to do?
Should I Worry About My Infant's Head Nodding?- Our 4.5 month old baby has recently started jerking his head from side to side (as if exercising the "no" movement, involuntarily). This phenomenon occurs mostly when he seems tired, but is not limited to this situation.
I am quite worried, since the phenomenon appears both "wild" and involuntary.
Sleep Apnea in Toddlers- Our son was referred to ENT for sleep apnea. The overnight monitor showed his O2 levels to be low, but not enough to warrant a tonsillectomy. However, his resting pulse rates through the night set off the monitor alarm, should we be worried?
Sweating and Leg Aches in a Preschool Child- My son is four years old and sweats an awful a lot, is that normal? He does this mainly at night while he sleeps. Also, how does one stop the constant complaining of "my leg hurts?" I rub it for about 15 minutes and he still wants more.
Testing For Autism?- How early can a child be tested for Autism? What kind of tests does it involve?
Toddler Sleep Problems- My daughter is 3 1/2 years old. I just spent the last year raising her alone while my husband was in Korea. Since we are a military family, our lives change every so often when it has to. Lately our daughter takes up to 3 hours to go to sleep, we have left her by herself and we have to take her back into her room at least 6 times. We've tried reading stories in her bed and staying in her room until she falls asleep. On occasion, she has lain in our bed for hours before falling asleep.
During the evening struggles, she often throws fits and kicks and screams. I need help! This is affecting my marriage and now I have become one of those mothers that I didn't want to become with a spoiled child. Please help!
Travel Health & Safety- Travel with kids can be an enriching experience for the entire family. In addition to recreation and relaxation, family vacations are a wonderful learning opportunity for children of all ages. Yet when traveling with kids there are a few travel health and safety issues to consider whether you are taking them out of state or abroad. The following tips will ensure you are prepared in the event a child falls ill or requires medical attention on the road.
What Alternatives are There for HIV Positive Kids?- A few weeks a go, my sister's daughter was diagnosed HIV positive AIDS. She has been put on an ARV program and there is still very low study in this area.
Since this is a life problem, ARV's are very acidic and so will affect the life of this child. Even social help is very low. What could be your alternative advice, because there seems to be no help for children with this disease? I would be glad to hear from this blessing of FC.
What is Pyloric Stenosis?- What can you tell me about pyloric stenosis? My first born son had this but other than telling me his first born son may have the same problem they did not tell me much about it. He had projectile vomiting and they kept changing his formula with no success until the surgery at 6 weeks old.
