Guest Of Honor Night
by Beth Fisher
Here is a great family activity that everyone can enjoy and look forward to.
Call it "Guest of Honor" night. Every Friday night (or whatever day of the week you prefer), the family member of honor gets to choose: the menu, the dinner music, the topic of conversation, and the after-dinner activity (usually a video, or board game).
To make it extravagant, you can even pull out the good China or choose to have the honoree use "the good plate".
First, everyone except the guest of honor makes a card for the honoree. Just a short note saying something special about that person.
Second, at the table, everyone mentions at least one thing about the honoree that they are thankful for, or admire in them.
Last, if finances allow, a small trinket gift is bought for the honoree.
This can get your kids excited about digging through cookbooks and looking for exotic recipes. They may even want to do the cooking themselves.
You can choose any order. Perhaps start with Dad, then move on to the oldest child, middle child, youngest child, then Mom.
This night gives each family member a chance to feel special, and gives the rest of the family a chance to show the others how important they are to them.
